I have an HP Pavilion laptop (AMD A-10) running windows 8.1 and it's totally stuck on this ridiculous diagnostic thing.I transferred a load of photos to it from my old laptop and it started running super slow. I rebooted and it hung on boot so did a hard restart. Now I can't get past this stupid diagnostic thing. I can't see any way to quit or bypass it and it just sits there doing nothing at all.I don't have a Windows 8 disk as they are not supplied with laptops anymore. All I wanted to do was copy my photos. The laptop was running perfectly before. Please help. Hi mageg4,We understand your frustration. Can you provide a few more details as to which Diagnostic program tool is/was running? For example if it was a Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, it would tell you at the very top what it is that is running and for which purpose. This tool would check for memory problems. It would also state that Although this test may seem inactive, it is still running and that it would restart the computer when it has completed the test. Stuck on 'Diagnosing Your PC' 11:22 AM I have an HP Pavilion laptop (AMD A-10) running windows 8.1 and it's totally stuck on this ridiculous diagnostic thing.
Also when these types of things occur, it would give you a step or Test Status which would indicate at what percentage the test is completed and give you a clue as to what is happening in most cases. There are probably other things to consider as well but this is an example and if you could provide more details about this tool test, someone will be able to assist you once this information is known to help build an understanding to prevent things like this from happening again and to improve your windows 8.1 experience. Please provide more details/updates if this issue is resolved.Have a great day-SuperJava. Hi mageg4,Hopefully this issue does not return. The fact that we do not know exactly why it presented itself makes me think it could return for a similar reason it presented itself to you in the first place. That said I found a link from a MS Engineer that responds to your very question(s). I would suggest to follow up and understand what is happening so that you will know what to expect and what you may be able to do the next time if this occurs again. Here is the link:Here is the MS Win8 Forum that you can also use to troubleshoot/inquire about as well as seek additional support from MS Support.Glad it is working now and Good Luck-SuperJava. The last Christmas I bought myself a gateway and I ended up throwing it in a drawer because for some reason let me teenagers playing with it look up stuff online and what not and then give it back to me something wasn't working properly I couldn't fix it it kept on saying diagnosing your PC and then it would go to preparing automatic car repairs and then it would shut off and turn back on before and it wouldn't let me get a push try to go to f2 to make changes and it wouldn't allow me to do anything that was just stuck in that loop no matter what I did. I did windows and F1 did alt and as 12 nothing has changed and me the video to show however if they want to see it basically it three minutes of me just doing exactly what I just said. ![]() I was just doing what I usually do on my laptop (homework, some games, Internet) then it said automatically shutting down in 4 minutes. Well every time it says update. I just get it out of the way and reset it. Maybe once a week? Once every two weeks. Lets just put it as rarely. Why's this?Well laptops get warmer way faster than PC's, and I use my laptop exactly the way you do, for homework gaming and internet surfing and mine gets warm (Samsung series 3).And since your'e Win8 (meaning boot up time is under 1 minute), I'd say you would do the laptop a favor and even see a sgnificant boost in performance if you would shut it down every night. That's just my opinion though. I just got a new Asus laptop that was already preinstalled with Windows 8. And after using it for the usual things that I do and shutting it down after, it won't start normally again. First, it says 'Preparing Automatic Repair' for like a minute or so. Then it blacks out for a second. And comes up again saying 'Diagnosing your PC' after like five minutes it says a new message saying 'Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete'. After hours of waiting it still hasn't finished and the next thing I know is that the screen's all blacked out but the backlight is still on. I am completely hopeless right now. So that the computer will shut down instead of restarting? If this doesn't work, then I recommend having it plugged in at night so it can do the system repair all night just incase it is a length proccess. Another thing could be taking it into Microsoft so they can handle it. Your last resort is wiping the HDD clean in a way. Either take it in to where you got and explaing the problem and hopefully they won't mind reinsatlling Win 8 for you, or do it yourself by taking out the HDD, plugging into a tower PC with a properly installed version of Windows and just format it. You'll need to buy Win8 yourself if you choose the manual way.Oh and did you try making a Win7 repair disc? It works on Win8 and will offer to reinstall it clean. Lenovo Preparing Automatic Repair LoopThis is the only thing it does.work on Bios F2. Lol.and how do you get the laptop to START in safe mode, bypassing the infinite loop of the automatic repair.THAT is the real question, to which I have not required out.F8 or Shift+F8 isn't working!Sigh - just in case someone else finds this - it is F9 for Windows 8 and it isn't safe mode anymore but it will help. You can choose refresh and lose all your software, or the second choice and do a factory reset. Nice set of choices.I am having same problem, I hit F9 but my options are boot manager.
